About Hearthwick

Updated May 2026

Hearthwick is an independent reference archive focused on the documentation of candle-making traditions, artisan wick crafts, and wax heritage in Italy. It operates as a local information resource, not as a commercial entity.

What This Archive Documents

The archive covers three interconnected areas of Italian craft history: the production and ritual use of beeswax candles in monastic contexts, the preparation and braiding of natural wicks by regional artisans, and the properties of wax materials used across Italy's distinct geographic zones.

The material draws on regional craft records, ecclesiastical inventories, and published academic sources in Italian craft history. Where primary sources are available, they are referenced directly. Where accounts differ, the range of documented interpretations is noted.

Scope and Approach

The archive concentrates on Italy, particularly the central and northern regions where documentation is most dense — Umbria, Tuscany, the Veneto, and Lombardy. Southern Italian traditions in Puglia and Calabria receive coverage where the material record permits.

The approach is descriptive and comparative. Articles present what is documented, note where evidence is thin or contested, and avoid speculation beyond what the sources support.

Who Compiled This

Hearthwick was assembled by a small editorial group with backgrounds in material culture history and Italian regional craft documentation. The group is based in Perugia, Umbria.
